Car camping was becoming a theme. Arrive late, sleep in the car, set off early. It’s a system that works well but usually means you are shrouded in fog as you set off up. This day was no exception (apart from the car park which was fog free). We had spent a while picking our spot to park. There were some massive pot holes which were filled with water. I had visions of losing Arthur down one in the semi-awake morning. We were now getting used to the car camping routine; drink fizzy, eat sweets, put on a Spotify playlist and snuggle up.
In the morning we got some tea from a van that had parked up in the night. Perfect. Returning from the mountain with the promise of hot food would be a good motivator. As we set off we posed for pictures with the ponies who called this place home. The path was well marked and navigation was ok to begin with but I only had a 1:50,000 map. It wasn’t too cold but the weather seemed changeable.

We started at a steady pace and made good progress. After a while we reached a ridgeline that indicated we needed to turn left. The wind was strong and freezing. It was a freezing fog wind that could strip you of warmth in minutes. I told Arthur to go back down 10 or 20 metres where we could put on some more warm layers. Then we headed back up. Navigation was a little more complicated owing to the various paths, thick fog and the 1:50,000 map. We pushed on and eventually made the summit. There was little to see which was a big shame. Speaking to some people who had wild camped the night before we were assured that the views were amazing!
Heading back down we went via Corn Du which involved only a little extra effort. The only issue was the cold. We had been a bit caught out. I rushed the navigation and almost took us on the wrong path. Fortunately their was a break in the fog that lasted about 20 seconds. It was just enough time to allow me to relocate our position. The going was good and we descended rapidly. As we descended the temperature increased and the fog thinned. It was still fairly early so we decided to do some more hiking and we carried on our adventure. Before we did, I got myself a double bacon and cheese burger from the van. That was nice. The weather lurched between fairly hot and quite cold without warning. After a couple more hours of hiking through amazing countryside we decided to call it a day and we made our way back to the car. It had been another awesome weekend.
